I started to write Goodbye Trasylvania when I was 20 years old. In fact,I was in a communist country for the first time since leaving communist Romania as a young boy. As I waited for the bus, along with, Cecy from Peru, Jaime from Canada and Karin from Norway to the villages where we fulfilled most of our one month mission, I began to get nostalgic. I remembered what it was like when I was just 8 years old waiting on a bus to take my mother and I back to the village shortly after the revolution had begun. Contrary to the cold day in Romania, this was a dry summer day in Cuba. The quiet, dusty and empty streets only fueled my nostalgia and sparked within me the inspiration to write.
The first chapter was actually about the first latin country that I had visited which was Puerto Rico. In many ways Cuba reminded me of Puerto Rico. They were both islands in the caribbean with similar flags, cultures, and people. But at the same time they were worlds apart.
What started out as a chapter on that hot summer day, became a book that would chronicle most of my young adult life, but only 5 years later. As much as I wanted to finish it earlier, i kept prolonging it due to my inability to sit down, collect my thoughts and begin writing. Eventually on a cold depressive February while living in Columbus,Ohio after finishing On the Road by Jack Kerouac, I was inspired to finally put pen to paper and finish what I started.
So please let it inspire you to not only puruse your dreams, but to discover your life's purpose.
